    In thanking him for the gift of a Garter badge after the Berlin Conference, Lord Beaconsfield wrote, 23 July 1878: "We have known each other, now, for more than thirty years, and, often, in trying times; and under any circumstances, it would be agreeable to remember, that there has never been a cloud between us.
