"[Baptized] November [...] 20. Hester D: of Mr. John Backhouse."
It may not be immediately obvious that "Hester Backhouse" baptized in 1647 is identical to Esther Bacchus who married John Huntington in 1685. A lease of two closes in Cottingham Southwood dated 25 March 1675 refers to "Ester Bacchus, spinster" (Hull Heritage Centre catalogue, C DDEY/26). It is known to concern the same Esther Bacchus since the two closes were being leased to Mordecai Bacchus, of Beverley, gentleman, whom Esther names as her brother in her will. To have been a spinster in 1675, she would have reached her majority by that date, and therefore would have been born probably before 1654. Furthermore, her brother Mordecai, whom she names in her will, is identified as "Mordeca: S: of Mr. John Bachous" who was baptized 28 November, 1646, at Holy Trinity, Hull. Esther is therefore inferred to be identical to his sibling "Hester D: of Mr. John Backhouse" who was baptized 20 November, 1647, also at Holy Trinity, Hull. They were evidently children of the marriage of John Bacchus and Jane Jefferson, which was solemnized 19 February, 1628/29, at Holy Trinity, Hull.
