  He was the last member of the Croft family to be Lord of the Manor of Stillington. His father having died in 1871, he inherited the Manor and estates upon attaining his majority in 1878. In the intervening years, the estates had been administered by his mother and trustees, who let Stillington Hall to Mr. Jasper Macaulay.
