1. | Matthew (Stewart), 4th Earl of Lennox was born on 21 Sept. 1516 (son of John (Stewart), 3rd Earl of Lennox and Lady Elizabeth Stewart); died on 4 Sept. 1571. Other Events:
Notes: He campaigned in Provence for Francois I against Charles V, 1536; was given King Henry VIII's niece for his wife and lived in exile in England, invading Scotland with 18 ships as English Lord Lieutenant of northern England and southern Scotland 1544; was forfeited for treason after invading Scotland again 1545; burnt the town of Annan 1547; raided Scotland again 1548; was restored 1564; became Regent for his grandson the King from 1570; defeated Huntly and the Hamiltons and besieged Edinburgh Castle 1571; was mortally wounded while a prisoner during the attack by Huntly and Lord Claud Hamilton on his Parliament at Stirling; and died after rescue 4 Sept. 1571. Matthew married Lady Margaret Douglas on 29 June 1544. Margaret (daughter of Archibald (Douglas), 6th Earl of Angus and Princess Margaret Tudor) was born on 7 Oct. 1515 in Harbottle, Alwinton, Northumberland, England; died on 9 March 1577/78.
