    • Embroidered badge: A representation of the star of a Knight Grand Cross whether of the military division or the civil division;

• Size of Order: Ordinarily, a maximum of 120 Knights and Dames Grand Cross, 295 Knights and Dames Commander and 1,455 Companions. However, additional appointments may be made in times of war or in the event of any military or civil action or service which merits ‘peculiar honour or reward’.

• Comments: Appointments to this order are normally from the higher ranking military and civil servants of the Crown. The order is split into two divisions, military and civil, and all three ranks exist in each. Women have been eligible for the Order since 1971.
