C.U.H.&G.S. is pleased temporarily to offer a genealogical research service
in return for a fee. We can research only families primarily resident in
England, Scotland, and Wales. (Irish research is difficult owing to the
destruction of many records in Dublin by fire in 1922.)
Repositories or resources which we can visit or use include:–
- The National Archives, Kew,
Cambridge University Library (a Copyright library),
National Probate Registry,
The British Library,
Ancestry.com,
FindMyPast.co.uk,
TheGenealogist.co.uk,
FamilySearch.org,
London Family History Centre (LDS) microfilm collection.
These provide access to sources including
- U.K. censuses,
Most U.K. parish registers,
Historic newspapers (national and local),
Various wills and testaments (including P.C.C. and post-1858 probates),
Army records,
Genealogical material published in the U.K.,
General Register Office (G.R.O.) indices.
We charge a fee of £20 per hour for genealogical research. This sum includes
copies of records (unless restricted by Copyright), except G.R.O. certificates
(though these are rarely required for results) and post-1858 probate records.
There is no charge for an initial enquiry. If you wish to proceed with research,
we require advance payment for the first block of hours.
We also offer a family-tree compiling service, if you already have information
about your family, or it is already easily available, for example in Burke's
Peerage & Baronetage or Landed Gentry. We can produce very smart typed pedigrees
in PDF format (any paper size), which can be printed. Please enquire for more
information, and to agree a small fee for the completed family tree.
To make an enquiry, please email heraldic@cusu.cam.ac.uk, and one of our members will reply to you.
