Loyal Addresses from the University of Cambridge
"A certain number of bodies enjoy by long-held prescriptive right (dating back in some cases to the seventeenth century), or by express grant from the Crown, the privilege of presenting addresses – but not petitions (
i.e. requests from individual subjects) – to the Sovereign seated upon the throne, and of receiving a reply from the Sovereign's lips." (From the entry for "Privileged Bodies" in The Royal Encyclopedia.) One of these bodies is the University of Cambridge. The other universities accorded this privilege are those of Oxford, St Andrews, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London.
