Major Sites

The Internet has become an indispensable tool for genealogists. It enables them to exchange information about methods and to publish results quickly. A number of sites have appeared which include a great deal of information and also many links. It will take you a long time to examine all parts of any of these. In general, they are very reliable and their authors are experts. If you want to start your study with a smaller site before looking at these larger ones, try Norman Buckley's Help with Genealogy. An example of what developments we might expect in the next few years can be seen at Cheshire BMD where the indexes of the Cheshire Register Offices can be seen on-line.

Counties

Local government has been reorganised considerably since the 1970s. Geographical extremists have used this to retrospectively change the location of various towns and villages. (They will quite happily insist that your great-great-grandfather was not born in Somerset but in Avon!) Organisations exist to prevent the spread of this confusion.

Occupations

Property

There is also a growing interest in the history of one's home. When and under what circumstances was it built? Who lived there previously?

Acts of Parliament

Maps

Genealogists are interested in two types of maps: (a) Modern-day ones – to find churches, record offices and so on; and (b) Old ones – to examine where their ancestors may have lived.
